Event

Last Month I went to Trolls & Légendes in Belgium, for their 20th anniversary edition. It’s probably my favorite convention out there, mixing TTRPG, Miniatures and tabletop games, Art, Books, Fantasy and medieval clothing, and so on…

Le mois dernier je me suis rendue à Trolls & Légendes à Mons en Belgique, pour l’édition de leurs 20 ans. C’est sans doute ma convention préférée, mêlant JDR, GN, jeux de figurines et de plateaux, art, artisanat médiéval, etc.

I haven’t brought much (and even missed half of the con, since it became so big to visit all of it in just two days), but I managed to record and capture a couple of interviews of great names in the industry: Sir Ian Livingstone, the legendary co-founder of Games Workshop and of the Fighting Fantasy books, as well as Stéphane Nguyen, long-time sculptor and painter, for brands like Rackham (Confrontation). More were recorded but sadly the quality wasn’t good or listenable enough for you all to watch.

Je n’ai pas rapporté grand chose (et j’ai même manqué la moitié de la convention tellement c’est devenu trop grand pour tout faire sereinement), mais j’ai réussi à enregistrer une paire d’interviews de grands noms de l’industrie: Sir Ian Livingstone, le légendaire co-fondateur de Games Workshop et des Livres dont vous êtes le Héros, ainsi que de Stéphane Nguyen, peintre et sculpteur de longue-date, qui a notamment officié chez Rackham (Confrontation). Il devait y avoir plus de vidéos mais malheureusement leur qualité était trop médiocre.

Up here is the invitation card I made for the Ol’ Yul Can Eat event. Supposedly, every guests were gathered by the Butler-thingy of Ol’ Yul, in order to take part in the challenge of satisfying his impossible appetite. The text blends together French and English, to accomodate all guests, but to also serve as a reminder about how Cooking is an important part of French culture. Here’s a translation of the card:

Voici le carton d’invitation que j’avais réalisé pour l’événement Ol’ Yul Can Eat. Supposément, tou·te·s les invité·e·s étaient réuni·e·s par le majordome du Vieux Yul, en vue de les faire s’affronter lors d’un challenge visant à satisfaire la faim insatiable de ce dernier. Le texte mélange français et anglais, pour être compréhensible par le plus grand nombre, mais aussi afin de rappeler l’importance de la Cuisine dans la culture française. En voici sa traduction:

“Dear [guest’s name], You are invited to the Great Restaurant of the great Ol’ Yul. Please come with your best Cook* (*[blood splattered] Apprentices). Bon appétit. Love, [scratched out name].”

“Cher [nom de l’invité], vous êtes convié·e au Grand Restaurant du grand Ol’ Yul. Veuillez venir accompagné·e de votre meilleur Cuisinier* (*[tâche de sang] Apprentis). Bon appétit, Sincèrement, [nom rayé].”

Funfact is that the card was handcrafted! Indeed, it was made during Hammertime 2024, while I was working at the Alcyon Studio‘s booth (the team behind the French Translation of Forbidden Psalm). I often have sparks of creativity hitting anywhere anytime and I have always my notebook and a couple of parchment papers with me to note them down, so while I was at the con, meeting and speaking with so many creators, artists and game designers helped me to finalize the concept and idea behind the whole event and why it would start narratively.

D’ailleurs, ce carton a été réalisé à la main ! En effet, je l’ai produit durant le Hammertime 2024, pendant que j’assistais sur le stand d’Alcyon Studio (l’équipe derrière la traduction de Forbidden Psalm). J’ai souvent des élans de créativité arrivant à n’importe quel moment, pour cela je suis donc toujours munie de mon notebook, afin de les coucher sur papier. Ainsi durant la convention, être entourée et échanger avec autant de créateurs et d’artistes m’a inspirée à finaliser le concept derrière l’événement et comment le faire démarrer narrativement.

I had very much fun practicing typographic work of art, even if it’s very simple, so much that I have recently once again tried the exercice for another Æternopian project I will show you off in a near future. In the meantime, enjoy your stay in Æternopia and be careful of what you eat!

J’ai eu beaucoup de plaisir à réaliser cet exercice de calligraphie, bien que le résultat reste simpliste. Tellement que j’ai récemment renouvelé l’expérience pour un autre projet lié à Æternopia, dont je vous parlerais dans un futur proche. En attendant faites attention à ce que vous mangez !

Normally, this weekend would have seen the happening of the first official event set in Æternopian’s Lands: OL’ YUL CAN EAT. Unfortunately it has been cancelled by the absence of too many folks to be able to run properly said event.

En théorie, ce weekend aurait dû être celui du tout premier événement officiel se déroulant au sein d’Æternopia: OL’ YUL CAN EAT. Malheureusement, j’ai du l’annuler faute d’assez de participants pour qu’il puisse se dérouler dans de bonnes conditions.

But be assured that all involved work won’t go to waste: while I still don’t know if I will try to run it again in the future (for now I feel a bit too much let down to think about that), I will keep this series of dedicated logs running from time to time to give you updates and stories around it. For now, enjoy the teaser that was made for the event, setting up the narrative premise that would have see our crew gathered by Ol’ Yul himself…

Mais n’ayez crainte, le travail effectué en amont ne le sera pas en vain: même si je ne sais encore si je proposerais à nouveau cet événement narratif dans le futur (étant encore un peu trop déprimée à ce sujet), je dédierais cette série de Logs spécialisés à vous tenir informer et à poster des éléments qui tournent autour de ce dernier.
