End of an era for Octo \/\/ La fin d’une \u00e8re pour Octo<\/mark><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

A bit late\u00b2 to report that one, but here is another recap of the biggest game event in France: Lyon Convention of Octog\u00f4nes<\/strong><\/a>, organized by the local gaming group FAJIRA<\/em>. This year was also a special year for two reasons: first it was the latest time it happens in Fall (next year it will now move in May), and then it was also the latest year the convention would take place at the Double Mixte<\/em>, usual place for it since its humble beginnings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Avec un peu de retard\u00b2, voici un r\u00e9cap sur la grande messe annuelle du jeu en France: le salon lyonnais d’Octog\u00f4nes<\/strong><\/a>, organis\u00e9 par la FAJIRA<\/em>. Cette ann\u00e9e \u00e9tait d’ailleurs doublement la fin de tout un symbole pour ce dernier: de une, d\u00e9sormais le salon se tiendra en mai (au lieu du traditionnel mois d’octobre), et de deux c’\u00e9tait aussi la derni\u00e8re \u00e9dition au Double Mixte<\/em>, traditionnel lieu de tenue de la convention depuis ses d\u00e9buts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

For those who don’t know the event, it is a convention set around games in all their form – from tabletop games to TTRPG, with miniature games in between (and also a bit of LARP, TCG and videogames on top of all that) – with conferences and actual plays performed as well over the 3 days of it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Pour celleux qui ne conna\u00eetraient pas l’\u00e9v\u00e9nement, il s’agit d’un salon principalement ax\u00e9 sur le jeu de plateau, le jeu de r\u00f4les et le jeu de figurines (sur lesquels viennent aussi se greffer le jeu vid\u00e9o, le Grandeur Nature, le TCG et les m\u00e9tiers du jeu de mani\u00e8re plus globale) avec des conf\u00e9rences, des Actual Play et autres joyeuset\u00e9s en prime.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

This year, I attended it as a guest (due to this website and project), to take part in such a talk about which setting between Fantasy or Scifi provides the best anchor point to develop your setting and miniatures game. Of course, as the talk was recorded, once the video is out on my friend’s channel I will put up a link for it on here too (for French speakers amongst you).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

J’y \u00e9tais d’ailleurs invit\u00e9e pour participer \u00e0 une conf\u00e9rence sur l’usage d’univers codifi\u00e9s (Science-Fiction, Fantasy) comme ancrage pour le jeu de figurines, en ma qualit\u00e9 de cr\u00e9atrice de ce blog autour du World-Building<\/em> figurinistique ambiance “pot-pourri de tous les genres esth\u00e9tiques possibles” (d\u00e8s que l’enregistrement de la dite conf\u00e9rence sera post\u00e9, je ne manquerais pas de vous la reposter).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Octog\u00f4nes is also a good reason to play games for 3 full days (sleep is for the weak… or the week after), to meet great people and do stuff unplanned, like attending a Gundam<\/em> TCG Tournament in the evening with no deck (thanks Operation Meteor<\/em> Team for the lend and invitation to play). You can also come to take part in the Octopainting<\/em> contest, a painting competition that never cease to impress years after years with its incredible level overall.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Octog\u00f4nes c’est donc l’occasion de tester toutes sortes de jeux durant 3 jours non stop (y compris la nuit), d’y rencontrer du beau monde et de faire tout ce que l’on avait pas pr\u00e9vu de faire (comme participer \u00e0 un tournoi improvis\u00e9 de TCG Gundam<\/em>, merci \u00e0 la Team Operation Meteor<\/em> d’ailleurs pour l’invitation). c’est aussi l’occasion de participer \u00e0 l’incroyable concours de peinture de l’Octopainting<\/em>, qui ne cesse d’impressionner chaque ann\u00e9e par son niveau incroyablement \u00e9lev\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Having mostly stationned at the miniature games zone, I noticed that amongst the new games of the day (Sol Braynia, Pillage, Guards of Traitor’s Toll, Trench Crusade, Warcrow<\/em>) and the ancients (Infinity, Confrontation, Bolt Action<\/em>), there was a surprising amount of unexpected but lovely games pushed by indie players (Full Spectrum Dominance, Children of the Village<\/em>, etc)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

M’\u00e9tant surtout attard\u00e9e sur la partie figurines (ma sp\u00e9cialit\u00e9), il y avait un peu toutes les nouveaut\u00e9s du moment (Sol Braynia, Pillage, Guards of Traitor’s Toll, Trench Crusade, Warcrow<\/em>) mais aussi des anciens (Confrontation, Infinity, Bolt Action<\/em>) et des p\u00e9pites ind\u00e9 dont seuls les b\u00e9n\u00e9voles qui animent le salon savent en d\u00e9goter (Full Spectrum Dominance, Children of the Village<\/em>, etc).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

But I still went upstairs (where TableTop RolePlaying Games stood) to check other fields of gaming: that way I listened to a conference about the use of soft skills<\/em> from roleplay in other artistic jobs, discovered new promising TTRPG (Aquamuros<\/em>), interesting books for work (“Cyberpunk, histoire d’un Futur Imminent<\/em>“), or even the latest spinoff game from the Gloomhaven<\/em> universe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mais cela ne m’a pas emp\u00each\u00e9e aussi de faire un tour \u00e0 l’\u00e9tage (consacr\u00e9 aux Jeux de R\u00f4le) ou au reste du salon: j’ai pu notamment y \u00e9couter une conf\u00e9rence sur l’usage des soft skills<\/em> issus du JDR dans d’autres professions artistiques, notamment audiovisuelles, d\u00e9couvrir des JDR prometteurs (Aquamuros<\/em>), des livres int\u00e9ressants pour le boulot (“Cyberpunk, histoire d’un Futur Imminent<\/em>“) ou le dernier rejeton de la famille Gloomhaven<\/em> c\u00f4t\u00e9 platal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Amongst the crowd of 18.000 attendants, I finally have been able to meet Sceptik<\/a><\/strong>, my favorite illustrator on this blog (who came to expose a couple of great grimdark gunpla) as well as the rest of the Sinistre & Sombre<\/a><\/em> community, which is always a pleasure to see in-person that bunch of amazing artists.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Parmi ses 18000 et quelques visiteurs, j’ai aussi enfin pu rencontr\u00e9 l’illustrateur pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9 de ce blog: Sceptik<\/a><\/strong> (qui avait pour l’occasion ramen\u00e9 ses plus beaux mecha grimdark) ainsi que le reste de la troupe Sinistre & Sombre<\/a><\/em>, dont c’est toujours un plaisir de rencontrer les incroyables artistes qui composent ce groupe de cr\u00e9atifs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

On the shops and publishers side of things, on top of Trollune<\/a><\/em>, the local FLGS for the whole town, there was also Occicat Games<\/em> with the latest expansions they made for their game Olomoc<\/a><\/em>, as well as Monolith<\/em> demoing their new Berserk<\/a><\/em> licensed boardgame, or even the new and promising shop La Guilde des Figurinistes<\/em>… and all the other people, companies and games I can’t mention as numerous as they were.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

C\u00f4t\u00e9 boutiques et \u00e9diteurs, en plus de Trollune<\/a><\/em>, le pilier du jeu lyonnais, il y avait aussi Occicat Games<\/em> avec les toutes derni\u00e8res nouveaut\u00e9s Olomoc<\/a>,<\/em> Monolith<\/em> avec la d\u00e9mo de leur tout nouveau jeu de plateau Berserk<\/a><\/em>, ou bien encore la jeune et prometteuse boutique et future salle de jeu locale de la Guilde des Figurinistes<\/em>… Parmi tant d’autres personnes, \u00e9diteurs et jeux que j’oublie de citer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Following all these, the travel back to home in train filled my mind with memories, instead of loot (I only bought the latest Gloomhaven game from Cephalofair<\/em>, and a box of Wargame Atlantic<\/em> Zombies to fill my bitz box).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ainsi le retour en train fut rempli de belles images, \u00e0 d\u00e9faut de repartir les bras charg\u00e9s (j’ai su me tenir et n’acheter seulement que le dernier Gloomhaven solo “Boutons & Bestioles<\/em>“, ainsi que des zombies de chez Wargame Atlantic<\/em> pour alimenter ma boite \u00e0 rabiots).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

It’s an event you should do at least once in a lifetime if you are in France at the time, or if you want to check what games and people plays in other places of the world. Maybe next year then?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Bref, c’est un \u00e9v\u00e9nement \u00e0 faire au moins une fois dans sa vie si vous \u00eates de passage en France ou int\u00e9ress\u00e9\u008f\u00b7e par voir ce qui se fait loin de chez vous (si comme moi vous n’\u00eates pas de la r\u00e9gion). A l’ann\u00e9e prochaine l\u00e0-bas, peut-\u00eatre ?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
